About Ascend

Jails are overcrowded and time in jail rarely helps people who have committed crimes to re-enter society with the skills to avoid re-offending and lead a successful adult life.

The alternative sentencing program Ascend has been approved as a pilot program by the Sacramento County Criminal Justice Cabinet, and is currently available in Sacramento County. It costs about $17 a day, which is less expensive than the work project cost of $40 per day.

Individuals who are thinking about pleading guilty or no contest can request to participate in this program rather than serve jail time as part of their sentence.  This request should be communicated to the Court by your attorney.

Melissa is very familiar with this program and has successfully argued the merits of this program in front of the courts.

Once the individual has decided to request to particiapate in the Ascend program, Melissa will then discuss with person the Ascend entrance criteria.  If the person meets the criteria, Melissa  can request Ascend instead of jail time as part of the individual's sentence.

Individuals who have either been found guilty after a jury trial or who have entered a guilty or no contest plea may also be eligible for participation in the Ascend program.  If granted, participation in the Ascend program may also shorten your probation to one year.

(The typical probation time is 3 years.)
